Superintendent's Website Message

Dear LT Community,

During the summer months, the hallways at LTHS may be empty and bells may not ring, but both North and South campuses are busy with activity. Teachers spend time enhancing curriculum and shoring up academic supports for students. Our facilities buzz with construction and contractors making improvements, including two new and improved South Campus science labs, a refurbished art wing at South Campus, and a new track at Bennett Field. While these much-needed facility and curriculum changes have been made, our LT traditions and expectations for success remain in tact. This year’s goal will remain the same - to improve the academic achievement of all students.  The start of a new school year brings new students, classes, experiences and opportunities, as well as a renewed effort to meet the needs of all students with appropriate enrichment and support.

We intend to build upon our success and accomplishments of the 2010-2011 school year, which include impressive academic triumphs, with eight seniors earning perfect scores on the ACT and 46 students earning national recognition testing into the National Merit Program, as well as two first place finishes in state athletic competitions for the second consecutive year. We were overcome with pride as our century-old student newspaper, Lion, was honored with the Golden Eagle: Best in Class 2011 award by the Northern Illinois School Press Association, 13 students were named All-State musicians and radio station WLTL won more than 10 national awards.  Our continued efforts were recognized with a 2010 Bright Red Apple Award for educational excellence by School Search.  LT was one of 73 out of 868 districts to receive the award. Although these achievements are commendable, the student body remained humble by giving back to the community despite a tough economy.  LT’s Secret Santa gift drive sponsored 120 students, and with the help of the associate schools, $60,000 was raised to send 96 WWII veterans on the Honor Flight Chicago to visit their memorial in Washington D.C.

This year, we are ready to apply the momentum from last year and persist in our efforts toward excellence. We will continue to reinforce our First Class Principles, which help ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed and further his/her aesthetic and moral development. Our sustained focus on maintaining a safe school climate will continue to build a comfortable foundation for our students, faculty and staff to improve learning and increase academic achievement. We are fortunate to have a very strong financial base, and we will continue to remain purposeful and prudent when budgeting our finances. As superintendent, I will continue to strive for greater student achievement, open communication and fiscal responsibility.

I encourage you to join the LT Community Advisory Council, volunteer your time and talents with the Parent Teacher Council or Booster Club, or support one of our various athletic teams or theatrical performances. By demonstrating an interest in your child's education, you’ll help us in making your child plus our 900 incoming freshmen families feel part of the LT community.

LT is continuously grateful for your steady encouragement and dedication to our students and school. I am excited to work with all of you and get to know more of the people who make up this wonderful LT community in order to provide our students with another year of engaging educational experiences—inside and outside of the classroom.

Sincerely,
Timothy B. Kilrea, Ed.D.
