LTHS Summer Internship
This new and innovative program takes a page out of the corporate and legal worlds’ recruitment pages: summer internships as a way of attracting pre-service, education professional candidates. At LT, the Summer School Teaching Internship Program gives us an opportunity to view a prospective teacher candidate within our own setting, with our own students, and within a controlled environment. If the summer intern performs well, he/she might be offered a letter of intent for an opening the following fall. The program is for qualified, current, college/university students who are between their junior and senior years and/or for candidates who have not yet student taught.

Below, please find specific elements of the Program.

  • Internships offered: 3 weeks or 6 weeks.
  • In conjunction with the college/university, we anticipate that candidates would receive credit at their schools, through a reciprocal arrangement with LTHS and at the discretion of the college/university, i.e., internship hours. Candidates are responsible for making this arrangement.
  • LTHS will compensate interns $600 for each 3 week semester (maximum of $1,200 for six weeks).
  • Interns would be assigned to work with specific teachers, who would effectively mentor the intern; however, a rotation schedule of assignments also takes place whereby interns would be assigned to work with other Summer Academic Program personnel, e.g., librarian, nurse, Summer Program Director, student assistants, special education coordinator, etc.
Interns are assigned to an experienced LT teacher.
  • Specific LTHS position openings will be available depending on summer course enrollments.
  • Mentors tutor and co-teach with the interns; in turn, interns assist the classroom teacher vis-à-vis tutoring students, developing and presenting lessons, co-teaching with the mentor teacher, observing the mentor teacher and other teachers, etc. Essentially, the intern performs many of the same duties, functions, and responsibilities as he/she would do during student teaching, but as an intern, he/she would also be seeking to gain employment here at LTHS.
  • LTHS seeks the best candidates for the program based on recommendations from the college/university and/or application materials and interviews.
  • The Summer Internship Teaching Program employment process mayinclude but may not be limited to an online application, submission of resume, credentials and transcripts, an interview, and writing sample.
  • The number of Summer Teaching interns is limited to courses that typically run during the summer as well as to those for which we are in need the following school year, to the interns’ chosen fields of certification, and to the availability of experienced LTHS teachers teaching those courses during summer school. We place a maximum of 5 interns during the summer.
If college/university credit is sought by the candidate, colleges/universities should have pre-service teacher supervisors make at least one visit to LTHS to observe interns during the summer and provide LTHS with a written record of same.
  • Summer teaching interns would be expected to attend all meetings their mentors attend, and to perform as many regular teacher duties as possible.
  • We may also provide the following to make the experience as supportive and professional as possible: weekly journal reflections on specific topics provided to the interns; observation records (number to be determined) written by mentors and other professional staff with whom the interns might work, e.g., nurse, librarian, Summer Program Director, etc.; visitation records which we would enlist from college/university supervisors; and an exit questionnaire/survey and interview as a means of getting feedback about the interns’ experiences.
