Paulsen, Gary. Guts: the true stories behind Hatchet and the Brian stories. The author relates the true stories that inspired him to write the novel Hatchet.

Paulsen, Gary.  How Angel Petersen got his name Author Gary Paulsen relates tales from his youth in a small town in northwestern Minnesota in the late 1940s and early 1950s, such as skiing behind a souped-up car and imitating daredevil Evel Knievel.

Schwartz, Alvin.  Scary stories to tell in the dark. Stories of ghosts and witches, "jump" stories, scary songs, and modern-day scary stories.

Myers, Walter Dean.  Handbook for life. Sixteen-year-old Jimmy, on probation for assault, talks about life with three old men in a Harlem barbershop and hears about the tools he can use to get what he wants.

Neenan, Colin.  Thick. Nick, 17, is in a holding cell awaiting trial and telling his lawyer what happened. He begins with his admission of guilt: he killed someone.

Shan, Darren.  Cirque du Freak series: Vampire Mountain. In book four of this popular series, Darren and his vampire mentor, Mr. Crepsley, decide to journey to the vampire territory. Along the way, the duo are attacked by a grizzly bear and encounter a crazed vampiress. 

Vizzini, Ned.  Be more chill.  Badly in need of self-confidence and a change of image, high school nerd Jeremy Heere swallows a pill-sized super computer that is supposed to help him get whatever he wants.


Biography

Crawford, John.  The last true story I’ll ever tell: an accidental soldier’s account of the war in Iraq. Having joined the National Guard for the tuition benefits, Crawford, like many of his contemporaries, never expected to do any heavy lifting. Early on, he admits his is "the story of a group of college students... who wanted nothing to do with someone else's war." But when his Florida National Guard unit was activated, he was shipped to Kuwait shortly before the invasion of Iraq.

Montville, Leigh.  The big bam: the life and times of Babe Ruth. A biography of Babe Ruth, based on newly discovered documents and interviews, providing information on his childhood in Baltimore, his discovery of baseball, and his record breaking career as an explosive slugger and cultural icon.

Moore, Kenny.  Bowerman and the men of Oregon. A biography of Bill Bowerman, discussing his family and youth, World War II service, and marriage and children, with a focus on his tenure as the running coach at the University of Oregon from the 1950s to the early 1970s, a position that led him to invent the waffle-soled running shoe later produced by Nike, and to develop other innovations in running.

Myers, Walter Dean.  Bad boy: a memoir. Author Walter Dean Myers describes his childhood in Harlem in the 1940s and 1950s, discussing his loving stepmother, his problems in school, his reasons for leaving home, and his beginnings as a writer.
