John D. Armstrong II, M.D., a 1956 graduate, is a physician and professor at the University
of Colorado in Denver. He holds appointments in Diagnostic Radiology, Pulmonary Sciences and
Critical Care Medicine, and is Associate Director of The Center for Ethics and Medical Humanities.
A world leader in the field of radiology and lung and chest disease detection, he has lectured
extensively in the U.S., Canada and Europe, at university medical schools, international and
national conferences, and professional societies. Author of over 65 professional journal articles,
chapters and books, Armstrong has published information on issues from imaging and detection of
lung disease to ethical dilemmas in medicine. He has received the "Outstanding Faculty Teaching
Award" seven times and has performed radiological and cancer research over two decades. He earned
his bachelor and medical degrees from the University of Kansas and returned to school receiving a
master's degree in philosophy at the University of Colorado with a focus on medical ethics. He is
chair of the University Hospital Ethics Committee and Associate Editor of Ethical Issues in
Medicine. In addition, he has found time to coach and referee youth soccer, teach Sunday school,
and work with the Boy Scouts of America.
