A 1960 graduate, Joseph Kinnebrew received a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and master's from Michigan State University. His paintings as well as his sculptures are considered to be uncommonly diverse in their scope. He is well known across the nation as both a sculptor of monumental and smaller scale work, as well as a surreal painter. His work appears internationally in private and corporate collections, as well as permanent collections of over 25 major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution. His work has been commissioned by the Ford Motor Company, Detroit Receiving Hospital, Harris Bank and Trust Company - Chicago, among others. Eight hundred pieces of art were chosen in 1996 to represent the finest art in the U.S. at the end of the millennium. Three of Kinnebrew's paintings were selected. He was an invited participant in the International Art Exposition in Osaka, Japan, received the Michigan Governor's Award for sculpture, and was the recipient of the largest individual artist grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. According to Kinnebrew, "Art is enduring. It tells us more about people long since past and continues to record our history this very day. Art is fed by the spirit and those boundaries go well beyond national, religious and cultural borders."
