Inducted in 2007
Named “Best Reporter in Ohio” by the Ohio Associated Press four times and once by the Society of Professional Journalists, Tom Meyer has had a successful career in broadcast journalism since his graduation from Lyons Township High School in 1971. Meyer worked for various radio and television stations before graduating from the University of Illinois in 1975 and then covered city hall and police beats for WAND-TV in Decatur, Illinois. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee and worked for WTVF-TV uncovering corruption in the state government, including the Governor’s office. While working at WJW-TV in Cleveland, Meyer created the I-Team in 1979 followed by the Fact Finder investigative unit, both of which sought out wrongdoing, political corruption, illegal activity, and consumer fraud. Since then, Meyer has joined WOIO-TV, also in Cleveland, and has become known as “The Investigator.” In October 2007, Meyer will continue his investigative reporting career at WKYC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Cleveland. Many of Meyer’s investigations have prompted changes in the law, consumer reform, firings, criminal investigations, arrests and indictments. He has received more than 175 local, regional and national awards, including 54 Emmys and the Press Club’s National Headliner Award. Meyer has also been honored by the Associated Press, National Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists. The Ohio legislature recognized Meyer for his “ exceptional” work, and he was mentioned by name on the floor of the U.S. Senate in conjunction with an insurance fraud investigation that has since led to changes in the law. In 2003, Meyer was inducted into Northeast Ohio’s Radio-Television Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
