Douglas B. McKeag, M.D., a 1963 graduate, is a family physician, educator and sports medicine researcher. Recognized as the father of primary care sports medicine, he helped provide the impetus for the upgrading medical care of athletes at all levels. He is one of the founders and president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, trustee of the American College of Sports Medicine, serves on the editorial board of eight medical journals, and is the leader of what is considered the best training program in the world for primary care sports medicine. He received his master's and medical degrees from Michigan State University and joined the MSU faculty in 1977. A professor in the Department of Family Practice and adjunct professor in the School of Health Education, Counseling, Psychology and Human Performance, McKeag helped pioneer an innovative curriculum now accepted at major medical schools throughout the country. He is a prolific writer and researcher. For 1 8 years he served as team physician for MSU intercollegiate athletic teams and serves in the same capacity at the University of Pittsburgh. He has been chief investigator on 15 major federally funded grants, one of which formed the basis for what is now the NCAA Drug Testing and Education program. McKeag is the author of 20 books and/or book chapters, more than 100 publications, and 35 research papers, and was awarded the MSU's Distinguished Clinical Faculty Award for 1995.
