Inducted in 1998
A 1972 graduate, G. Henry Mundt, III has played a major role in the development of the most successful banking trend in the last ten years, the ATM network. As one of the Founders of the Cirrus ATM network, Mundt linked ATM's together so customers could access their accounts at many banks around town and the world. To accomplish this he helped create a massive computer and telecommunications network linking all the ATM machines on a real time basis and created global standards for members to interface. MasterCard International acquired the Cirrus network in 1988 and asked Mundt to lead the global expansion of the network. Mundt serves as Chairman and CEO of the Cirrus System and Executive Vice President of MasterCard International with responsibility for all global deposit access products. Mundt has continued to be a leader in the development of new payments services, introducing MasterCard debit cards and more recently, MasterCard SmartĀ® cards. He is a frequent speaker around the world on the topic of the future of electronic banking and is a frequently quoted expert in the consumer press. He continues to pursue his dream of applying state of the art technology to the banking business. He has embarked on an aggressive plan to enable consumers to use computer chip SmartĀ® cards to replace cash and checks and gain access to the full range of banking products and services via the Internet.
