A 1954 graduate, Donald Sessions is a head and neck surgeon, medical educator, cancer researcher and professor of Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. A world leader in the field of head and neck cancer surgery, he has developed and reported procedures which have improved survival rates while simultaneously preserving his patients' ability to function. Having received a bachelor's degree from Princeton cum laude in English and German literature, Sessions is a researcher and writer with more than 100 original journal articles, 20 chapters in textbooks, and two books that are widely used. His medical degree in 1962 was from Washington University. Following his lifelong interest in human interactions and their ethical implications, Sessions is active in bioethics at the local, state, and national levels and has served as chair of the ethics committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Active in medical and professional associations, Sessions has served as Governor of the American College of Surgeons and as president of the Missouri chapter of that organization. As director of education in his department, Sessions has trained a generation of head and neck surgeons.
