Crean Named Presidential Award Winner :::

Lyons Township High School is proud to commend Jason Crean for his recognition as a National Winner for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching by the National Science Foundation. Crean teaches Biology at South Campus.

Crean was named a winner by President Barack Obama after being chosen by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians and educators following selection at the state level. As one of 103 recipients of the award from around the nation, Crean will travel to Washington D.C. for a celebratory ceremony later this year. He will also meet with members of Congress and science agency leaders, as well as attend numerous educational events.

Along with the award, Crean was granted a $10,000 prize to be used at his discretion. Perpetually dedicated to his students, he would like to use some of the money to renovate the animal exhibits at the South Campus vivarium. Crean frequently stresses the importance of animals in the classroom and also serves as an adviser to the LTHS Zoology Club. Crean ensures there is a diverse group of lab animals, and the club focuses on enhancing the lives of the animals as well as maintaining their good health. Crean believes working with a variety of species can help instill in students an interest in biology and provide them with a great deal of experience. Continuing to share his passion for animals, Crean will be directing Teacher Workshops at Brookfield Zoo this summer. He will focus on inquiry-based lab activities so that teachers can utilize the lessons and activities in their own classrooms.

Crean was very surprised and honored to have received the award. He is excited to engage in many new experiences while in Washington D.C. Crean is “still in shock” over the recognition, and will continue to uphold his high standards in teaching and share his passion for science with his students.
