WLTL Radio Named Finalist :::
WLTL Radio 88.1 FM, the student-run radio station of Lyons Township High School, was recently named a finalist in the 2010 New York Festival “World’s Best Radio Programs” Awards. This is the second time WLTL has been presented with the honor, the first taking place in 2008. The 53rd annual New York Festival recognizes professional as well as non-professional stations. The Festival is known for its commitment to quality in judgment as well as their international viewpoint--having brought in entries from more than 30 participating countries.
WLTL is nominated in the Best Comedy Program category for their submission of “Walk the Plank,” a student written, recorded and produced sketch-comedy show. Former WLTL-er’s Griffin Filipitch and Michael Nauheimer, both 2010 graduates from LaGrange Park, served as the show’s top producers and writers and made it possible for many other students to help achieve the finished product. “Walk the Plank,” a monthly show, which started in 2004, ended in 2006 and was revived in 2009, has also been awarded a Communicator Award of Excellence in 2009, as well as a John Drury Award in 2009-2010.
WLTL is the only radio station nominated in the Best Comedy category and may be the only high school finalist. Other finalists in the “World’s Best Radio Programs” festival include ESPN Radio, ABC News, BBC (England) and Sirius/XM Satellite Radio, to name a few. Each year the Festival receives entries from radio stations, networks and independent producers form more than 30 countries.
This year, the awards ceremony is taking place on September 24 at the Manhattan Penthouse, New York City.
