LTHS math teacher earns Butler University’s “Outstanding Teacher” Award
Congratulations to Lyons Township High School math teacher Kris Blachinski for being named a Butler University Outstanding Teacher. Blachinksi was nominated by current Butler University junior and 2008 LTHS graduate R. Colby. Colby will graduate in May of 2012 with degrees in both Secondary Education and Mathematics. She wrote, “Ms. Blachinski truly cared about her students and how they were doing. She had high expectations for her students and did her best to help them understand difficult material.” The faculty of the Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Science at Butler University appreciates excellence in teaching and Blachinski’s ability to inspire future mathematicians.
LTHS named regional winner in science lab challenge, receives $3,000
Lyons Township High School was recently named one of just 18 regional winners in the National
Science Teachers Association’s Shell Science Lab Challenge. LT’s region covers Illinois, Iowa, and
Wisconsin. As a regional winner, LT will receive a $3000 prize package and the district’s
application will move on to the national level for a chance to win additional prizes, including the
Grand Prize Lab Support Makeover Package that would bring total winnings to a value of $20,000.
Each regional winner school wins a $3,000 science lab prize package that includes:
* Designation as an "NSTA/Shell Science Lab Challenge Regional Winner,"
school banner, and trophy;
* $1,000 in donated science lab equipment/materials/gift
certificates;
* $1,000 Shell Science Lab grant to purchase science/lab equipment
and science education resource books;
* $300 gift certificate to the NSTA Bookstore;
* One year NSTA membership for two teachers;
* NSTA Learning Center subscription for two teachers; and
* Paid registration for two teachers to attend a fall 2011 NSTA Area
Conference on Science Education.
Applicants had to illustrate replicable approaches to science lab instruction utilizing limited school and laboratory resources.
