LTHS Faculty Set the Pace :::
Lyons Township High School science teacher Jason Crean received two awards at the annual National Association of Biology Teachers Conference. He received the Ecology/Environmental Science Teaching Award for successfully developing and demonstrating an innovative approach in teaching ecology/environmental science and for carrying a commitment to the environment into the community. This award included $1,000 toward travel to the Conference, $500 of equipment, and a one-year complimentary NABT membership. He also received the Excellence in Encouraging Equity Award, which recognizes efforts by biology educators to encourage, promote and strive for equity in the educational community. The award included a plaque and an honorarium.

LTHS Spanish teacher Joan Stopka presented on Multiple Intelligences at the fall 2009 Illinois Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages conference. She will also assume the role of President of ICTFL in January.

LTHS Special Education Paraprofessional Gail White was recently selected to be a coach for the Male Special Olympics National Basketball Team from Illinois. She will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska this summer for the National Games for nine days.

LTHS Director of Curriculum and Instruction Scott Eggerding recently presented at the National Council of Teachers of English Annual Conference. His session, From the High School Looking Up, detailed the redesign of LT’s Language Arts program to require space for interpersonal communication, media literacy, and non-fiction writing models to the delight of college composition instructors.

LTHS chemistry teacher Michele Lenz is a member of the Secondary Education Advisory Committee at St. Xavier University. She recently served as part of a panel held for student teachers on applying, interviewing and hiring. The panel gave the soon-to-be new teachers some insight on what to expect in the hiring process for their first teaching position.

Several LTHS Physical Education teachers recently presented at the annual Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Convention. Gretchen Clay and Scott Walker presented a session on a basic step-by-step lesson plan for a beginning swim unit. Kelly Neidig and Assistant Division Chair for PE Joann Pyritz described and discussed the policies, procedures and grading that LT physical education teachers utilize in order to encourage students to participate daily.
