LTHS social studies classes raise money for Doctors Without Borders :::

Lyons Township High School is proud to announce that the fundraising efforts of the Human Geography and Global Relations classes at South Campus netted more than $4,600. As part of units studying poverty and development, the classes decided to donate to Doctors Without Borders to demonstrate that everyone can make an impact.

The Human Geography class studies how Americans interact with the rest of the world through political, social, cultural and economic lenses. The accelerated Global Relations course focuses on the foreign policy of the United States with relation to global conflicts, like poverty, war, terrorism and globalization. Students in all 10 classes over the two semesters selected Doctors Without Borders and were encouraged to donate. Many classes held bake sales to help raise awareness for Doctors Without Borders and to encourage their peers to become involved.

This year marked a new fundraising effort, with one Human Geography class organizing a benefit concert featuring student bands and performers that raised more than $500 in one evening. The lighting designs and sound mixing were created by S. Thompson ‘12. Performers from Lyons Township High School included:

Doctors Without Borders is an international medical humanitarian organization that brings medical aid to people facing crises regardless of race, religion or political affiliation. It provides aid to people in nearly 60 nations and advocates for improved medical treatments and protocols for people around the world. In the United States, 100 percent of funding for Doctors Without Borders comes from donations from private donors. Doctors Without Borders consists of more than 27,000 people from dozens of nations working in a variety of capacities to further the goals of the organization and bring medical care to those in need.
