Lion Pacemaker :::
Lion wins top national newspaper competition
Lyons Township High School’s student newspaper, Lion, was recently named a Pacemaker award
winner by National Scholastic Press Association and the Newspaper Association of America
Foundation. Lion was one of only 26 high school papers nationwide to earn Pacemaker status. The
Pacemaker award is an honor considered to be high school journalism's Pulitzer Prize.
"The Pacemaker competition is a head to head, tough competition. It's such a huge honor just
to be nominated," said Lion adviser Jason Scales.
Scales said the award is a reflection of the students' hard work. “Editors, reporters, and
photographers spend countless hours agonizing over every inch of space. It’s nice to see their
efforts applauded.”
Judges select Pacemakers based on the following: coverage and content, quality of writing and
reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art
and graphics.
Pacemakers are selected by the staff of a professional newspaper in the host city of the
JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention; 2006 entries were judged by the Chicago
Tribune.
