LT’s Lion staffers applauded

Every year, the National Federation of Press Women honors the best student journalists in the state with awards through the High School Communications Contest. Lyons Township High School captured two of those top honors.

The NFPW Communication Contest is designed to inspire students to excel in their quest for excellence. Students compete in 17 categories: Editorial, Opinion, News Story, Feature Story, Sports Story, Column, Feature Photo, Sports Photo, Cartooning, Reviews, Graphics/Photo Illustration, Single-Page Layout, Double-Truck Layout, Environment, Video News Story, Video Feature Story and Video Sports Story. Each winner receives a certificate, with first-place winners also receiving $100. Honors are presented during the High School Communications Competition Awards Luncheon at the annual NFPW conference, which is scheduled for September 8-10, Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska.

Senior and Lion News Co-Editor W. Podlewski took Honorable Mention in the News Story category for his story, entitled “O’Boyle’s death draws LT together.” An Honorable Mention went to junior and Lion Assistant Sports Editor T. Schoder in the Video Sports Story for “Chicago Wolves Future Journalist Media Day.”

The NFPW is a nationwide organization of professional women—and men—pursuing careers across the communications spectrum. As professionals in the area of print and electronic journalism, public relations, advertising, freelancing, graphic design, new media, marketing, photography and more, they are committed to the highest ethical standards in communications, protecting First Amendment rights and growth.
