Lion named among best of student newspapers :::

Lyons Township High School's student newspaper, Lion, recently took 4th place in the nation in a “Best of Show” competition for high school newspapers of 17 pages or more. The judging was based on the first issue of this school year. Lion was named among the top student newspapers in the nation at the Journalism Education Association and National School Press Association annual convention in Washington D.C. earlier this month.

Eight Lion staff members were among more than 6,000 students from over 300 schools who attended the national conference to help improve their journalistic skills. It was the largest convention in the history of the event, which has been an annual event since the 1920s.

In addition to networking with fellow newspaper editors and reporters, students participated in on-site writing and design contests. Five of the eight students placed highly in national writing contests, with two earning the highest rating possible:

• Senior T. Meyer, won a “Superior” rating for editorial writing
• Senior T. Stelnicki, won a “Superior” rating for commentary writing
• Senior T. O’Brien, won “Honorable Mention” for sports writing
• Senior M. Glowicki, won “Honorable Mention” for copy editing and headline writing
• Senior M. Lyons, won “Honorable Mention” in advertising design
