Model United Nations Club :::

Sixteen members of the new Model United Nations Club served as delegates to El Salvador at the recent University of Chicago Model United Nations Convention.

Students served on eight committees and discussed and debated a variety of topics. For example, members of the World Health Organization Committee, an agency that addresses global health-related issues, discussed genetically modified food and stem cell research, while the members of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, a regional body charged with debating and resolving economic issues in Latin America and the Caribbean, debated how to close the income distribution gap and free trade agreements and the future of international economic cooperation.

Other Model U.N. convention topics of discussion included the role of diamonds in conflict, border control in Eastern Europe, opium cultivation and trade in Afghanistan, adult illiteracy, curbing dependency on non-renewable energy usage through the use of bio-fuels, and landlocked developing countries and their transition into the world economy, among others.

The Model United Nations experience brings to life the problems that face the real world and allows participants to represent their assigned country's position and work toward resolving issues of global importance.

Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the U.N. General Assembly. A Model U.N. delegate is a student who assumes the role of an ambassador to the United Nations. While awards are given out for the best speakers of each committee, there are no points as in debate.

LT’s Model U.N. sponsor John Cronfel says, “Any student can participate in Model U.N., so long as he or she has the ambition to learn something new and to work with people to try and make a difference in the world.” LT’s next competition is at the University of Illinois in April. “It will be a good chance for students to see the campus and to further their research, writing, and speaking skills,” he added

LT’s Model U.N. Club meets every Wednesday after school in Room C216 at South Campus, 4900 S. Willow Springs Rd., Western Springs. For additional information, contact advisor John Cronfel at jcronfel@lths.net
