National Scholastic Art Award :::
What do dirt, hot cocoa mix, glue, food dye, and old library books have in common? Not much –
unless you are Lyons Township High School senior S Millsap. Samantha used all of these items and
more to create a piece of art, entitled Silhouettes. She was named a national winner and received a
Silver Award in the Mixed Media category in the 2007 National Scholastic Art Awards.
Millsap’s winning piece began as a collage of pages from discarded books she dyed with tea to
make them look aged. She drew several images, cut stencils and shaved charcoal into dust to create
the drawings. With the help of food dye, dirt, cocoa powder and glue, along with a teacher’s old
transparency and boxes she created to frame the images, her winning piece was finished.
Millsap plans to attend the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and hopes to study
graphic design. Her art portfolio earned her $2,000 in scholarship monies.
More than 7,000 art pieces were submitted for judging at the national level; just a small
portion was selected as award winners.
