LT artist earns two Silver Awards :::
Senior L. Parker is a double winner in the 2008 National Scholastic Art Awards, earning two Silver Keys in the printmaking category - one for a drypoint and another for a silkscreen. Nationally, over 100,000 works were submitted at the regional level this year, with 10,000 of those being forwarded to national competition. Just 165 portfolio winners and 600 individual winners in art earned national recognition.
Parker’s winning silkscreen piece, “The Tusiak,” holds her brother as the subject. Silkscreening is a complicated process that involves stretching silk over a frame, using a photo emulsion to expose the print, cleaning off the emulsion, which leaves an image to be inked. The drypoint piece, entitled “Maggie and Liz,” was made by carving a drawing into plexiglass, using ink in the etched cracks and running the final piece through a printing press. Each project took about 20 hours each.
According to art teacher Patrick Page, “What sets Parker apart is her dedication in terms of time and effort. She has logged more time in the art room than anyone else this year. Her work is really about space and interaction, with exciting angles and compositions.”
Parker plans to attend the University of Texas, Austin and is considering Art History and/or Studio Art. Parker says she cannot image a year in school without an art class.
