WLTL
HOLDS ANNUAL FUNDRAISER ROCKATHON
LaGrange, Illinois – The staff and managers at WLTL Radio, the student-run radio station of
Lyons Township High School, are scurrying to prepare for their yearly fundraiser, Rock-a-thon.
Taking place over President’s Day weekend, February 18-21, the station will not only broadcast live
on 88.1 FM for 88.1 hours, but also broadcast over LTTV, LT’s cable station, which will be filming
the students in all of their fundraising glory.
Rock-a-thon has been annually since 1982. Although circumstances and revenues have changed,
the objective remains the same: To seek donations from listeners over four days to help ensure the
quality and longevity of the station. Last year, businesses and listeners pledged more than
$21,000, an all time record for the near 30 year tradition.
Each year, the students earmark monies raised for specific improvements. This year, the
students plan to put the money toward the creation of a new production room for editing and a
renovated on-air studio to further enhance their on-air sound. These station improvements will
hopefully help WLTL earn its fifth prize as the number one high school radio station in the nation.
In the past, Rock-a-thon donations have included upgrading the station’s website, purchasing new
mobile equipment for live broadcasts and last year, making facility and equipment updates to
further expand the station.
To collect money, student managers are working to acquire community business sponsors and
plan to go door-to-door through the neighborhoods surrounding the school. The broadcast for
Rock-a-thon begins at 6:00 am on Friday, February 18, and will continue the following four days. It
includes goofy races and stunts done for donations, musical acts and interviews, as well as a
variety of giveaways available to all who call in and donate.
