LIFE Program: Overview What is the LIFE Program?

LIFE (Learning Independence for Everyday) classes provide instruction in the following major areas: functional academics, life skills, pre-vocational skills, and social skills. Considerations when recommending a student for a LIFE course may include, but are not limited to, the student’s cognitive functioning, functional skills, level of independence, transition outcomes, and eligibility for alternative state assessment.

LIFE Program goals may include the following areas:

  • Functional Academics (Literacy and Math)
  • Independent Living Skills
  • Social Communication Skills
  • Community – Based Training
  • Vocational Training

The LIFE Program prepares students to achieve their post-secondary outcomes as written in their transition plan. 

How are students recommended for the LIFE Program?

Considerations when recommending a student for a LIFE course may include, but are not limited to, the student’s cognitive functioning, functional skills, level of independence, transition outcomes, and eligibility for alternative state assessment.

The mission of LTHS Special Education is to support students in developing the skills necessary to achieve their individual post-secondary goals through collaboration with family, school, and community partners.

LIFE PROGRAM- LIFE And Work Skills Overview

The focus of this course is to develop independent living skills and work readiness skills. Life skills development will focus on the areas of behavior, communication, community, self-care, self-awareness, self-advocacy, money, recreation, safety, social skills, time management, and weather. Work readiness skills will include career exploration, work behaviors and on-campus work training which is individualized based on student’s skills, abilities and interests. Emphasis will also be on interaction within the environment and the development of skills necessary for success in adult life. The content of this course is designed to meet the individualized needs of students based on their goals and transition plans. Due to this high level of individualization, LIFE & Work Skills is subdivided into distinct course sections. High consideration will be given to a student’s academic level, communication, motor functioning, functional behavior, and daily living skills when IEP teams determine the appropriate section for each student.

What is the size of the LIFE Program?

The LTHS LIFE Program has approximately 35 students enrolled for the 2021-2022 school year. The program is located at the South Campus. LIFE and Work Skills classes have a maximum of 13 students.
