Solar Eclipse Viewing August 2017

The eclipse will begin at LT at 11:55 am, and reach 50% coverage at about 12:50 pm.

It reaches maximum coverage (about 87%) at 1:20 pm. 

It reaches 50% coverage again at about 1:45 pm and will conclude at 2:40 pm. 

The eclipse will be most noticeable when it is more than 50% eclipsed.  

PLEASE NOTE: The Sun is NOT safe to look at at any point during the eclipse as viewed from LT.  Proper eye protection is required!  If no eye protection is available, the eclipse can be viewed by punching a hole in a piece of cardboard and projecting the light onto the ground or another piece of paper (Image 1 below).  Or, you can simply watch the light passing through the leaves of a tree (image attached).

The astronomy students will be taking a bus downstate to witness totality. Our exact location will be determined a day or two before the eclipse.
