- What is the National Honor Society?
- The National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the oldest, largest, and most widely recognized co-curricular student organizations in American high schools, with 1.4 million members. The purpose of the NHS is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to recognize outstanding students, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. Membership in local NHS chapters is an honor bestowed upon a student by applications and is based on the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.
- Why should I consider joining the National Honor Society?
- If you are just entering high school, you’ve probably already heard about the National Honor Society (NHS). But how can it benefit you? Membership can open doors to scholarships, leadership opportunities, and personal growth. It also encourages lifelong habits of learning and community engagement. Many NHS students go on to pursue higher education, and universities share these same values of leadership, character, scholarship and service through various degree programs.
- How does a student get accepted into the Lyons Township High School National Honor Society?
- During the second semester of their Junior year, eligible students (those with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 unweighted or 4.25 weighted) will receive an invitation to apply to their school email address. Apart from the GPA requirement, students need to show proof of at least 10 hours of community service during their high school career. (These hours do not need to be logged anywhere but just kept personally by the student). They also need 3 teacher recommendations to show they meet the expectations of the 4 pillars of NHS: service, scholarship, leadership and character. Students should be involved in clubs, sports or community organizations where they can show they promote the 4 pillars. Lastly students need to write a brief personal statement about how they exemplify the 4 pillars and what they will bring to the LT chapter of NHS. Applications are reviewed and if accepted, by late March of their Junior year, they will be officially invited to join NHS.
- When does a LT NHS member start their NHS year?
- LT NHS members start their chapter year April 1st of their junior year until May of their senior year.
- What does an LT NHS member do during their chapter year?
- LT NHS members should be committed to the 4 pillars of NHS (Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character. Service is the pillar that supports the other three. Members must accumulate at least 25 hours of service from April of their Junior year until March of their Senior year. Service must be done at school or in the community at large, be unpaid for their efforts and do commitments that give back to others. Members will continually be notified of upcoming service opportunities using this document and may also find service opportunities on their own. Hours are recorded using a website called x2vol.com. Members must maintain good scholastic standing, be involved in leadership activities and continue to show the utmost character in school and in the community.
- What else do NHS members contribute to?
- LT NHS members will not meet formally like other clubs but will be notified of school service events via email to volunteer at. These are not required but highly suggested to support LT. Such events include:
- School Food Drive
- Blanket Drive
- Week/Day of Service in February
- Blood Drives
- Creating Necessity Kits for the Homeless
- Other Service Events planned by the NHS leadership
- LT NHS members will not meet formally like other clubs but will be notified of school service events via email to volunteer at. These are not required but highly suggested to support LT. Such events include:
- What serves as the culmination of the LT NHS members chapter year?
- LT NHS members are officially celebrated at the NHS Ceremony in early April of their senior year. This is an essential event to attend and for families to celebrate the achievements of their student(s).

Membership Expectations
- Acquire 25 volunteer hours minimum
- Participate in the NHS Day of Service
- Log hours into x2VOL within 2 weeks of service to send verification to the sponsors
*Failure to meet above expectations will result in the revoking of NHS membership and students will not be given white chords for graduation.
