Two Lyons Township High School CyberPatriot Club seniors Daniel Babnigg and Ian Doherty were named Scholars in the 2021 National Cyber Scholarship Competition, a rigorous 48-hour online competition sponsored by the National Cyber Scholarship Foundation (NCSF). The award includes a $2,500 scholarship to the college of their choice and an invitation to participate in the Cyber Foundations Academy –a multi-week online program–valued at more than $3,000.
Babnigg and Doherty competed against 5,000 high school students in a cybersecurity competition designed to challenge its participants to solve computer security problems and/or capture and defend computer systems. In total, 50,000 students nationwide sought to qualify for the NCSC; with just 10% meeting the requirements.
LT’s CyberPatriots Club is based around the national CyberPatriots organization founded by the Air Force Association as part of the National Youth Cyber Education Program. The focus is to expose students to methods and techniques for securing technology systems, protecting cyber assets and encouraging exploration of cyber security education and careers, which they achieve through the groups’ regular meetings and competitions.
