Robotics Team wins Design Award

The Lyons Township High School Robotics Team was represented by 23880E Baby Drivers at the recent virtual VEX World Championship. They were assigned to the Science Division and competed against 39 other teams. While they came up a little short, falling in the Science Division head-to-head semifinals, they were named the Science Division World Championship Design Award winners.

A Design Award is presented to a team that demonstrates an organized and professional approach to the design process, project and time management, and team organization.

Design Award winners must meet the following key criteria:

  • Engineering Notebook must be submitted.
  • Engineering Notebook demonstrates clear, complete, organized record of robot design process.
  • Team demonstrates effective management of time, talent, and resources.
  • Team interview demonstrates their ability to explain their robot design and game strategy.
  • Team interview demonstrates effective communication skills, teamwork, and professionalism.

Seniors Brendan Hall, Mason Ownby, and Kevin Rife not only led their team this year but also last year when they all started with the Robotics Team. According to team sponsor Blake Sauders, “Over the course of two years, they represented LT and themselves well at tournaments. In total, they won four tournament championships including this year's Illinois State Championship, two Robot Skills Championships, along with an Excellence and Design Award. They also won several others in their two years.”
