Three hundred eighty-six new LT voters were added to the Illinois voter roll thanks in part to the League of Women Voters of the La Grange Area and the recent voter registration drive held at the district’s North Campus.
Just over 30% of the 1,259 eligible students were registered in-person during the drive. A new QR code allowed students to register online this year as well.
Any student who will be 18-years-old by November 4, 2022, was eligible to register. The June 28, 2022, election is a Gubernatorial Primary, when the governor and candidates for many Cook County offices will be on the ballot. Students who are 17 years old can vote in the March 20 primary as long as they turn 18 by the General Election on November 8.
LT’s Social Studies Division Chair, Paul Houston said, “Voter registration is one of the most important and meaningful applications of what we teach in the Social Studies Department. We value democracy and believe it works best when all voices are heard, which is why we work so hard to register students. Also, we are blessed with amazing individuals in our student body, and we know their contributions as citizens will improve our community.”
